interior design Oscar

Renowned interior designer Kit Kemp was recognised for her stylish decors at the 'Oscars of interior design' this month.

The co-founder of Firmdale Hotels, which operates a chain of trendy establishments across London, was awarded with the coveted International Interior Designer of the Year gong at the Andrew Martin Design Awards this month.

Kemp is the director of designs for the chain of boutique hotel, mixing classical and quirky home furnishings to create memorable interiors.

The designer was selected by a celebrity panel made up of Thandie Newton, Twiggy and GQ editor Dylan Jones and was lauded for her novel take on traditional English styles.

Martin Waller, owner of Andrew Martin International praised the self-taught Kemp, who draws her inspiration from the artistic world, for redefining 'the concept' of the city hotel.

'Her unique perspective brings flamboyance to interior design without ever sacrificing the essential commandment of comfort,' he added.

Each of the colourful rooms in Firmdale's hotels is unique, featuring specialist furnishings arranged in different combinations in order to ensure that they are 'living things, not stuffy institutions', in the words of Kemp.

Firmdale has hotels in London's exclusive Soho, Haymarket, Knightsbridge and South Kensington districts.
